COURSE DETAILS

OBJECTIVES

At completion of this program, the participant should be able to:
1. Discuss the fundamentals of ultrasound physics/instrumentation.
2. Explain the indications and applications for the use of transthoracic echocardiography in the critically ill.
3. Identify normal cardiac anatomy and list routine qualitative and quantitative measurements.
4. Recognise sonographic signatures associated with valvular heart disease, cardiomyopathies, coronary artery disease, pericardial and pleural effusions.
5. Demonstrate a focused cardiac ultrasound exam under supervised conditions.

COURSE TOPICS

• Imaging fundamentals
• Indications and applications for a focused transthoracic 2D cardiac ultrasound
• Cardiac anatomy and routine measurements
• Scan planes and imaging techniques
• Assessment of valvular abnormalities
• Assessment of pleural and pericardial effusions

Physicians and anaesthetists who have a desire to integrate cardiac ultrasound techniques for management of the critically ill.
